VOIP (Voice over IP)
Page history last edited by PBworks 2 yrs ago
Short for Voice over Internet Protocol, a category of hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet as the transmission medium for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using IP (Internet Protocol) rather than by traditional circuit transmissions of the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). VOIP technology has more potential for disruption/quality of service issues over standard phone lines or even cellular technology but the cost savings could be significant.
- For small offices with a couple staff and one phone line, a home-type VoIP provider like Sunrocket or Vonage is appropriate.
- For larger organizations where a PBX (private phone network where multiple phones share one or more outside lines) is needed, it is important to choose a business provider like Packet8, etc.
- Internet bandwidth is very important when using VoIP (higher speed DSL is okay for small office with one line, business speed cable modem or T1 is required for larger offices and multiple lines).
- Consult a telecommunications expert when implementing a large VoIP system.
